Pondicherry is a Union Territory formed out of four separate seaside enclaves; Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe, all of which are non-contiguous and lie within three separate states. Puducherry and Karaikal lie within the boundaries of Tamil Nadu on the Bay of Bengal, Yanam is in Andhra Pradesh on the Bay of Bengal and Mehe is in Kerala on the coast of the Arabian Sea. More specifically, each enclave is made up of smaller enclaves, called pockets, which are also non-contiguous. To further the convoluted identity, the city recently changed its official name from Pondicherry to Puducherry, leaving the territory of the same name in its original form. Puducherry, affectionately known by its previous nick-name Pondy, was designed based on the French (originally Dutch) grid pattern and features neat sectors and perpendicular streets. The town is divided into two sections: the French Quarter and the Indian quarter with many of the streets still retaining their French names. The city contains great examples of imported cultures that have made their mark on the architecture and styling of the city, though the encroachment of neighboring modern influences have added numerous other local flavors as well.
