Fatehpur Sikri Built by Emperor Akbar between 1571 and 1585 in honour of SalimChisti, a Sufi saint, FatehpurSikri was the Mughal capital for 14 years.

The chief buildings of the imperial palace complex, clustered on a succession of terraces along the sandstone ridge, formed the core of Akbar’s city. Even today, access to FatehpurSikri is provided by a straight road built by the emperor, once lined with exotic bazaars. These principal buildings consisted of Diwan-i-aam, Diwan-i-khas, the Turkish Sultana’s house, SalimChisti’s tomb, BulandDarwaza, and Jami Masjid among many others.

The Diwan-i-aam or the hall of public audience is sheltered on three sides, with beautiful jail screens on either side of the emperor’s throne- for the court ladies.

The Turkish sultana’s house is said to have been the house of Akbar’s favourite begum. The house is exquisitely carved with Islamic decorations and may have been used as a pleasure pavilion as suggested by some historians.

A white marble encased tomb of SalimChisti, under an ornate wooden canopy, encrusted with mother-of-pearl mosaic, lies within the Jama Masjid courtyard.

We also explore southern side of gate called the Buland Darwaza, it was built to celebrate Akbar’s brilliant conquest of Gujarat. The design for decoration show heavy Hindu influences and is decorated with beautiful carvings and inlay work in white marble. This huge 54- m high gate has provided inspiration for other lofty gateways, since.

Jami Masjid or the ‘Friday mosque’ is a grand open mosque that towers over the city of FatehpurSikri. It is considered a model for several Mughal mosques that followed. The spiritual focus of the complex is the tomb of Salim Chisti which remains a popular pilgrimage spot, even today.
